Abstract

The author argues that the only possible way of understanding the relationship of politics and economics in Late Imperial China is to start from the Chinese society itself. Arguments of previous scholars who found that there exists an incompatibility, or even a contradiction, between politics and economics, are reviewed. The author then goes on to suggest that from the viewpoint of Fu Tao analysis, in which priority is given to politics over economics, there is no contradiction, but even a certain coherence, between politics and economics. Finally the author discuss Fu Tao analysis in relation to economic development in Late Imperial China.
