Abstract |
The purpose of this paper is to show the intricacies of the Mencius-Chu Hsi studies. In order to examine how the varied interpretations of the Mencius in China’s intellectual history are situation-ally meaningful, the author raises three methodologically interrelated issues: (a) the historicity of historian-interpreter; (b) historical linguistically of the text; (c) the circularity of interpretation. It is concluded that history gives us not only uncertainty of interpretive dialogue, but also corrections and even enrichment of interpretation. |
