Abstract

Xia Jingguan, a poet of the later Tong Guang style, places particular emphasis on Meng Jiao in his study of Tang poetry. This article discusses Xia's views on Meng Jiao's reclusion at Mount Songshan and analyzes his re-evaluation of Meng's poems in terms of “exhaustiveness,"“eccentricity," and “depth." It then goes into Xia's positioning of Meng Jiao's poems in the history of Middle Tang Poetry. Through a comparison with Xia's contemporaries such as Hua Chenzhi and Wen Yiduo, this article investigates Xia's perception of Meng Jiao's poems and the significance of his Meng Jiao study in the history of poetry in modern China.
