Abstract |
In traditional interpretations of ritual, analogy plays a significant role. Analogical thinking is used in several important approaches to explaining, and making use of, the ritual classics, such as yili shili 以例釋禮, tuizhi 推致 and yue 約. This article introduces the concept of emotional and interpersonal analogy, which is a method of interpreting the ritual classics. The discussion found here focuses on the “Sangfu” 喪服 section of the Yili 儀禮 and related texts. The article begins by delimiting the meaning of “emotional and interpersonal analogy” and by exploring its origins in ritual. The article continues with an examination of emotional and interpersonal analogy in three different aspects: the content of the classics, the practical use of the classics, and research on the classics. These three aspects together demonstrate the importance of emotional and interpersonal analogy in the development of interpretations of the “Sangfu.” Finally, the article analyzes the mistakes scholars have made by misusing emotional and interpersonal analogy. |
