Abstract

    By “P‘ang-t’ung” 旁通, I mean a way of reading some special Chinese shih and tz’u in which the reader finds in a work a level of meaning which is parallel to and usually more signification than the literal sense of the work, but is not purposely conveyed by the author. 

    By “Chi-t’o” 寄託, I mean a way of reading some other special Chinese shih and tz’u in which the reader finds in a work a level of meaning which is also parallel to and usually more signification than the literal sense of the work, and is purposely conveyed by the author.
