Abstract

What I aim to do in this article is to provide a brief reconstruction of the significance in traditional China of worship in the Confucian temple. Institutionally speaking, there are, at least, three elements vital to practice of the Confucian temple as a ritual system: Confucius’ descendants, the spread of Confucian temple worship beyond the place of its origin, and finally Confucian canonization. Each of these has in history made its own impact on the formation of the Confucian temple as the locus of a statecult, and based upon the concept of structuralizati on I will discuss them in turn.
