Abstract |
Pinnan village was a very homogeneous rice farming village in Southern Taiwan when the author did his first fieldwork in 1971. however, economic differentiation has become very vivid because of industrial development in Taiwan today. In this article, the author divides one hundred households’ data into full-time farming households, part-time farming households, and non-farming households based on the occupations of both male and female household heads. Although there are 52 full-time farming households, the total number of agricultural workers in the village is less than non-agricultural workers. After a description of various economic activities in each category, the author tries to analyze the causes and effects of this economic differ entiation, such as the government’s agricultural and industrial policies, the aging of the agricultural population, the role of gender, and the impact of returning migrants. |
