This is paper studies noun phrase structures in Paiwan in terms of X-bar theory. The issues under consideration include noun-class markers, case markers, relative clause, etc. some of the important findings are (A) nouns are marked with distinct prefixes indicating their class; (B) the noun-class prefixes of person names are fused with case markers to form a special type of case markers; (C) case markers may denote referential properties; and (D) pronominal relative clauses are syntactically and semantically different from postnominal ones. |
